The Role of Trained Patient Care Attendants in Modern Hospitals

Patient care attendants bridge the gap between clinical nursing staff and patients' daily needs. Trained PCAs improve patient satisfaction scores, reduce nurse workload, and ensure dignity in care.

Patient Care Attendants (PCAs) are a critical but often undervalued component of the hospital care team. While nurses focus on clinical tasks, PCAs handle the essential non-clinical needs that directly impact patient experience and recovery.

Trained PCAs assist with patient mobility, personal hygiene, feeding, vital sign monitoring, and emotional support. In a well-staffed ward, PCAs allow nurses to focus on clinical care — improving both patient outcomes and staff satisfaction.

The difference between a trained and untrained PCA is significant. Trained PCAs understand infection control protocols, patient handling techniques to prevent pressure sores, and how to recognise and escalate clinical deterioration.

PrimeCare IFM's PCAs undergo a 3-week training programme covering basic nursing assistance, infection control, patient communication, and emergency response. All PCAs are background-verified and carry valid identity cards. We currently deploy PCAs across 15+ hospitals in Chennai and Bengaluru.
